"Culture is the heritage of us all. some may be more interested than others in the treasures of the past, but no one can fail to take a pride in his country's participation in the story of mankind, as represented in carvings, sculpture, music, paintings and the other arts. And there is a personal commitment to this, for no man can really say he is alone: we are all joined through our identity, with the cultures which are part of the mainstream of life"

"Your time is limited so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinion drown out your inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition" - Steve Jobs

Mama Monday Debut: Africa is THE CONTINENT - Part I

Word!
I am currently in Ghana visiting friends and we were having a useless conversation about how McDonalds is far superior in other places than in the USA.  As you know I love profound nonsense and as we were talking about good places to chow the cow in Europe, I said in response to someone mentioning France as an example that other places on the continent were good too, to the pseudo chagrin of others in the discussion.

They jokingly took umbrage because I had said the continent in reference to a delineated landmass other than our beloved Africa.  Though it was in jest and I was being chastised playfully, at the time I defended my usage of the phrase as I was talking in context: Europe had already been introduced into the conversation and so it was clear I was referring to it as aforementioned, and I had not applied stress through intonation by saying THE continent.  If I had done such an abominable thing, they would have had a much stronger case against me, and I would have pled guilty and carried out whatever sentence dealt uncontested to repent and correct my wayward ways.

I reflected on this later and realised that in general, as far as I am concerned, if I refer to the continent in any other context by default I mean the only continent worth giving such deference to: AFRICA baby!  There is only one.  Africa is THE continent. And that is the sentiment shared by all of the proudly African women I was powwowing with.  And by all Africans.  And anyone with sense really.

Then I wondered if people from other continents refer to their part of the world as the continent and then was overcome with great sympathy for them. Why? - Coz they are deluded!

I am here to inform you that despite whatever you may think, or how proud you may be, there are six continents in the world but there is only ONE that can be referred to as as THE continent - Mama Africa.  There is no argument to refute this irrevocable fact.  IT JUST IS. PERIOD. FULL STOP.  NEXT!

Mwaunfwa (You hear)? Africa has and always will be THE continent.

You're welcome, I am glad to have informed and/ or corrected you  he he he ;}.

Rebasing the Kwacha

This is a transcript of the pamphlet distributed by the Bank of Zambia, BOZ.  For further information contact: Public Relations Division, Bank of Zambia, P.O. Box 30080, LUSAKA 10101.  Tel: +260 211 228888 Email rebasing@boz.zm, Website: http://www.boz.zm. Of course I have edited, I canna help myself, commas and grammar are important.  I have not changed words or meaning.

You can get more information from BOZ and their webssite.  They are advertising in the paper daily, as well as frequently on tv and radio: the public can exchange their notes from 1st January 2013 and old Kwacha will be legal tender until 30th June.  During this period business must display prices in old and rebased currency and change must be given in new Kwachas whenever possible. After June 2013, prices will only be shown in rebased currency. Thereafter, exchange of old currency will only be possible at the central bank or a designated agent until June 2014, after which this facility will be available at the central bank itself.

KWACHA REBASING - ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

On 23rd January 2012, the Government of the Republic of Zambia approved the recommendation of the Bank of Zambia, BOZ, to rebase the Zambian Kwacha.  During the period prior to the launch, BOZ will provide information to ensure that the public understands what this process will entail.  In this publication, we provide answers to some pertinent questions that members of the public have been asking. and welcome any contributions that the public may have.

What is Currency Rebasing?

Currency rebasing involves dividing a currency unit by some denominator.  In this case the Zambian currency will be rebased by dividing the existing banknotes by 1000 hence lopping off 3 zeros from the exisitng K50,000, K20,000, K10,000, K5,000 and K1,000.

The lower denominations that include the K500, K100 and K50 will be divided by 1000 and converted into coins, while the existing K20 banknote will not be converted into a coin, due to its eroded purchasing power.  Thus, it will be eventually removed from circulation.

Why rebase the currency?

The decision to rebase the national currency has arisen from the need to address cost associated with an accummulated loss in the value of the Kwacha, arising from years of high inflation that characterised the Zambian economy in the late 1900s and the early parts of the 2000s.  Such high levels of inflation at that time resulted in inconvenience and risks involved in carrying large quantities of money for relatively low value transactions.  This then prompted BOZ to introduce high value denominations in 2003, which included the K20,000 and the K50,000 notes, to facilitate transactions.  In recent times, the economy has stabilised, and it has been decided that this is the right time to rebase the currency.

Will rebasing cause inflation?

No inflationary effect arising directly from rebasing is expected as the operation is basically a zero removal process, with the quantity of currency in circulation, in terms of pieces, remaining the same.  In other words, one K50,000 banknote for instance, will be replaced by one K50 rebased banknote.  The value, in terms of purchasing powerm of the K50,000 and the new K50 will be the same, hence will buy the same goods and services without increasing the prices.

What are the benefits of rebasing the Kwacha?

The benefits of rebasing the Kwacha can be divided into economic and social benefits as shown below:

Economic benefits:
i. It will reduce costs incurred in customising standard accounting packages, since most of these are developed in countries where values are mostly in millions and rarely go into billions and trillions.
ii. It will reduce time taken to input accounting information, thus improving accuracy and reporting times.
iii. It will allow the Central Bank to introduce coins in the high circulating denominations, increasing durability and consequently resulting into savings on costs usually associated with printing.
iv. Rebasing the Zambian Kwacha will increase credibility in the currency and will result in more confidence from both local and foreign investors.
v. Smaller digits will be easier to deal with and understand by the public.

Social benefits:

i. Re-introduction of the culture of using coins in Zambia will encourage technology transfer from developed nations in areas such as the use of vending machines, parking meters, etc.
ii. It will give the Central Bank future room to introduce higher value notes in line with economic growth without having to increase the number of zeros to extremely large numbers.
iii. It will hep the Central Bank to review security features on the banknotes, hence curbing cases of counterfeit notes.

When is the Central Bank going to launch the new banknotes?

BOZ will launch the new currency immediately the rebased currency is delivered to the Bank.  The two currencies,  both new and old, will circulate side by side for a period yet to be determined, while centres will be set up throughout the country to facilitate the ease of exchange of the currencies.

What will be the deadline for financial reporting?

BOZ will communicate the end date for Financial and other institutions to start reporting their financial statements using the new rebased banknotes as a unit.

Will BOZ educate the public on the use of new banknotes?

BOZ will embark on an extensive public education and awareness campaign to assist all Zambians in understanding issues surrounding rebasing of the currency.

How will the old currencies be phased out  and when will the new currency be introduced?

When the new currency is introduced, it will be allowed to run side by side with the old currency for a period to be determined.  This means that when members of the public deposit or use old currency in banks and other entities in the economy, the old currency will be withdrawn through commercial banks by BOZ.  At this stage BOZ will only issue the new currency to commercial banks.  Should members of the public have old currency in their posession following the expiry of the exchange period, they will be able to exchange the old currency with the new at BOZ or any of its designated agencies.  It is only after the adequate and stipulated period has elapsed that the old currency will be demonetised, i.e. will become illegal tender.

Will currency rebasing affect the value of savings?

The process of rebasing of the currency will simply change the amount quoted in individual accounts, but it will not change the value of money or indeed savings.  For example, an individual with a K200,000 balance in a savings account currently, after rebasing, the balance will reflect as K200.  The value, however, will remain the same.

In addition, if a household was spending K350,000 to buy a basket of goods and services per month, the household will spend K350 in the rebased currency to buy exactly the same amount of goods and services.

Will the exchange rate be affected by rebasing the currency?

Rebasing the currency will not affect the Kwacha exchange rates.  The exchange rates will simply be divided by 1000, as illustrated in the example below:

*ZMK Exchange Rate       ZMK Rebased Exchange Rate
US Dollar                   5000                               5.000
British Pound              7000                               7.000
Euro                           6000                               6.000
RSA Rand                    600                               0.600
*Please note that this is an example and does not necessarily reflect the current exchange rates.

Chipolopolo Stunner

Time to get back to the drawing board, we
have some wrinkles to iron out!
Do not let the title of this post confuse you.  We were not the "Stunners" we were at AFCON earlier this year, what was stunner about our first World Cup qualifying match is that we lost in the most humiliating fashion to Sudan.  I cannot describe how I feel any better than with my Facebook status update after the stunner of a loss:

Chipolopolo check your aim: instead of shooting down hawks in the desert, you have wounded your own people! My heart is bleeding, this is not the way champions reach higher heights. You are with the big boys now, step it up!

You can see just how stunned (yes I keep using the word coz I mean we were just blindsided man!) the nation was by the articles like this one in the Lusaka Times.  We couldn't even write about the defeat in detail it was so painful.  For a full breakdown of the match you can read this article and SuperSport really added insult to injury by juxtaposing how Les Éléphants have bounced back from their runners-up effort at AFCON to win their first qualifing match 2-0 against Tanzania while we fell from grace 2-0 to Sudan :(.

When you are at the top, to stay there you need to work harder and keep improving and not rest on your laurels as everyone is gunning to topple you to prove they are the best!  And Sudan have brought us from heights that quite clearly have made us dizzy-drunk with glory that we have been blinded into thinking the World Cup qualification is going to just fall into our laps! Sudan made this sobering episode in our post-AFCON history even worse as they infuriatingly performed every dirty trick in the book to waste time, fake injury and slow play down in a myriad of ways.  Really they should be ashamed of themselves, that sort of play does not belong in football, it sullies the beautiful game...Drogba looks like a saint when compared to the actions of the Sudanese team on Saturday! To further describe the disappointment and rage my beloved national team invoked with their lacklustre performance, I quote excerpts of my whatsapp convo with SPORTS GUZA:

SPORTS GUZA (SG): Is the game on SuperSport? ZNBC has no picture!

MbA: No

SG: OMG! 1st game after AFCON and we get this?

MbA: It took so long for ZNBC to confirm they would have a feed so not surprised they mucked up

SG: Idiots

MbA: They do this for the Ghana game next week there'll be riots coz that game is more important

SG: Yeah and it's on home ground

MbA: Exactly no excuse

We then decided to have radio silence till the game was over but then after the 2nd goal SPORTS GUZA, who had enacted the silence was the first to break it:

SG: Ouchhhhhhhhhh this really sucks

MbA: Dude! This is pitiful, Renard is even subdued! AFCON has past we need to prove ourselves all over again and not rest on our laurels.  So frigging upset. I know we are playing away but jeez we have a full team

SG: Yup and it proves what I said all the teams we will be playing want to prove something

MbA: Of course when you are at the top everyone wants to pull you down.  You have to work even harder to stay at the heights after you have climbed up there!

SG: The national soccer team hasn't had any practice since our win, FAZ claimed they didn't need it...Instead they were busy running with the trophy all over the country

MbA: I'm so angry I could shoot these bullets with my own copper

SG: From your wiring in the house?

MbA: AFCON is gone we have a new challenge, the World Cup won't just drop in our laps from the sky! Ha ha ha foolish, I have my own mine.

Full time is called and we have lost 2-0 to Sudan.

MbA: No words. Will have to blog about this when I calm down!

SG: Do so tomorrow: Talk about the lack of preparedness i.e. no friendlies, arriving in Sudan at midnight the day of the match, experimental formation, trophy tour and next week...

MbA:  Dude I'm speechless, tomorrow I shall write and post Monday.  Ivorians, Ghanaians, Eygytians all off to good starts jeez!

I was rendered speechless, a state normally foreign to me, but now I have regrouped and although this loss was painful, we can bounce back and World Cup qualification is still within our reach.  WE CANNOT PLAY LIKE THIS AGAINST THE BLACK STARS NEXT WEEK!!!!! So here are some things for the team to ponder, rectify and/ or take into account to regroup and remember how to be champions before next Saturday at Levy Stadium in Ndola:

Coach Renard: Have you been spending too much time washing your white shirts with all the free Boom detergent you have been supplied with now that you endorse the brand and not enough time figuring out strategy? Is your shirt so blindingly white now that the one you were wearing on the sidelines obscured your view with brightness so you couldn't see how Sudan kwempad us coz I didn't see your usual frenetic shouting of direction and encouragement during the course of the match? I suggest you go back to AFCON ways, the detergent you were using before kept your shirts white and your coaching skills were not affected.

Christopher Katongo:  Though you did try to motivate by example as you did at AFCON you were still not as effective as you were in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.  With 3 endorsements, I think that you have had too much money to spend so you think you have made it and do not need to do as much work now that you are a champion.  To stay a champion and a great leader you have to keep working hard so get it together.

Mayuka: Were you even on the pitch?!

Mweene: That farm you have been given coupled with the free Pepsi you are getting from that endorsement deal are making you fat on chicken and soda. Plus I'm sure you are eating desert too with free Parmalat custard (though I don't blame you that stuff is crack and heaven in a carton)!  If that is not true, then how were you not agile enough to stop being hoodwinked not once but TWICE!!!! And the second time was worse, they caught you napping coz you were busy yapping!  My favourite Chipolopolo, please do not cause me pain, life is hard enough as it is...

The rest of you, what is your explanation?! Find out what went wrong and fix it!!!!  I shall be checking in on you next week...
